I consume A LOT of hot chocolate. I particularly enjoy the Sea Salt Caramel kind I have right now. Anyway, as I was burning my hands the other day, I thought I might like a little jacket for my mug, and why not a little coaster for him to sit on? I then started to envision little kits for Christmas gifts! What a splendid idea! okay so I had to make a sample one just to figure out the kinks and this is it.
Here is the button detail:
Basically all I did was make two very small quilts and attached a button and hair tie to one.
Basic Instructions:
Mug Quilt: I measured around my mug and got the measurements 10"x 3.5". I cut out a piece from layered muslin, batting, and black fabric I had trimmed off the edge of one of my quilt projects, (I love making things from leftovers!) Then I did a basic straight stitch for quilting. I used my variable colored thread to add a little interest. Then I attached the binding with a hair tie tacked under one edge. I sewed the button on and then put it on the mug.
The Coaster is basically a very small quilt. Layered, quilted, and bound. I experimented with just using a normal bias tape binding and it looks horrible. I will now and forever only hand stitch my bindings. I learned my lesson. If you have no idea what I am talking about you can watch this video: Binding Your Quilt. It will teach you one way to do it. I do mine a bit differently but it is hard to explain.
Now my mug can stay nice a cozy!
amazing.
